Windows Vs Linux Security (A ctrl+c .. ctrl+v story)

Well, well, who is writing about windows and linux. Its Karteek, so, obvious is its pro-Linux article which I found at

They clearly listed out some myths and facts about security in both the Operating Systems. Lets go through them :)

Myth :Windows only gets attacked most because it's such a big target, and if Linux use (or indeed OS X use) grew then so would the number of attacks.
Fact :When it comes to web servers, the biggest target is Apache, the Internet's server of choice. Attacks on Apache are nevertheless far fewer in number, and cause less damage. And in some case Apache-related attacks have the most serious effect on Windows machines. Attacks are of course aimed at Windows because of the numbers of users, but its design makes it a much easier target, and much easier for an attack to wreak havoc. Windows' widespread (and often unnecessary) use of features such as RPC meanwhile adds vulnerabilities that really need not be there. Linux's design is not vulnerable in the same ways, and no matter how successful it eventually becomes it simply cannot experience attacks to similar levels, inflicting similar levels of damage, to Windows.
Well, yeah, I tried to tell this most of my friends .. especially Chintan .. and he never listened to me !!! Now, another one
Myth :Open Source Software is inherently dangerous because its source code is widely available, whereas Windows 'blueprints' are carefully guarded by Microsoft..
Fact :This 'inherent danger' clearly has not manifested itself in terms of actual attacks. Windows-specific viruses, Trojans, worms and malicious programs exist in huge numbers, so if one gives any credence at all to this claim, one would do better to phrase it 'Open Source Software ought to be more dangerous'. But the claim itself hinges on the view - rejected by reputable security professionals - that obscurity aids security. Obscurity/secrecy can also make it more difficult for the vendors themselves to identify vulnerabilities in their own products, and can lead to security issues being neglected because they are not widely-known. The Open Source model, on the other hand, facilitates widespread review and makes it easier to identify and correct flaws. Modular design principles support this, while the overall approach is far more in line with security industry thinking than is 'security through obscurity.'
Hey, I tend to work ... very carefully when everyone is watching me !!! Same is the case of opensource. If I'm an idiot, there always will be another guy to point me out. If I give you just binary, there wont be other guy to be arsed to point me. Now, to the final and important one.

Myth :Statistics 'prove' that Windows has fewer, less serious security issues than Linux, that Windows issues are always fixed, and that they are fixed faster..
Fact :Quite a broad collection of 'facts' exist in this category, but what they have in common is the (actual) fact that they are usually based on single metrics, on a single aspect of measuring security. Claims that all Windows flaws get fixed are baffling when we consider that there are Microsoft Security Bulletins saying some flaws will never be fixed, and the existence of these also makes it tricky to understand how the fix rate could ever get to be 100 per cent. In the case of Forrester, which produces the 100 per cent as the Windows result for one of several metrics, it is arrived at through tallying flaws and fixes within a specific period. In the same metric Red Hat 'comes second', on the basis that one flaw was not fixed within the period. This is a rickety base for Microsoft (not, note, Forrester) to build a security campaign on.

This aside, simply claiming that Windows is more secure than Linux because the time from discovery of vulnerability to release of patch is greater for Linux skips consideration of the importance of what gets fixed. A comparison of 40 recent security patches with reference to Windows Server 2003 and Red Hat Advanced Server AS v3 shows that Windows experienced the most severe security holes, while Red Hat had only a handful (four) which rated as critical. It is also arguable that Microsoft understates vulnerabilities in Windows Server, because some flaws are deemed not critical for Server on the basis of system defaults which are in many operational scenarios impossible to adhere to. For Red Hat, on the other hand, there is an argument that in Petrelely's analysis we have overstated the extent of critical vulnerabilities (Red Hat does not assign severity levels), and very few of them would allow a malicious hacker to perform mischief at administrator level.
Well, junta, just check the complete report card at theregister
Anyways, as usual .... Windows will live longer. But, I want to shout "Long live Linux !!!"

I Hate You !!!

I was little bored ... and I tried googling the phrase "I hate you". I found a link on wikipedia to an american romantic comedy movie .. "10 Things I Hate About You"

I dint read much about that except those 10 things told by the girl of the movie. They are lil funny. But, if you think, she is .. a very good example of being a girl. You cant understand them and yet you know them !!!

I'm listing down the 10 things here. So, try reading and analyzing them ;) ** If you are bored just like me !!!**

  1. I hate the way you talk to me, and the way you cut your hair.
  2. I hate the way you drive my car.
  3. I hate it when you stare.
  4. I hate your big dumb combat boots, and the way you read my mind.
  5. I hate you so much it makes me sick; it even makes me rhyme.
  6. I hate the way you're always right.
  7. I hate it when you lie.
  8. I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry.
  9. I hate it when you're not around, and the fact that you didn't call.
  10. But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.

No comments that I'm weird to read all that stuff .. but can't help it. And to add to your info base .. I hate it when people think that I'm weird !!

Trip de Ooty rocked !!!

Ooty Trip !!! Well, our ooty trip rocked !!! I loved each and every place on the hill. Especially suicide spot was awsome !!! Check the picture for our team picture on Ooty hills.

Well, yeah .. you are correct, thats a blank picture. Our ooty trip rocked in our dreams. Out of 11 people who are supposed to catch 9.00 PM train, only 8 managed to arrive at station before that. Remaining 3 had some office work and and thanks to Chennai traffic, they managed to reach only after 9 !!

The brighter side of the trip is .. I came to know that Indian Railways became damn punctual !!! Atleast on departure side. The train started moving exactly at 9.00 !!!

Man, it was an utter disappointment as I was dreaming to enjoy those great moments with team at Ooty. But, had to maintain a smiling face, so that my team mates wont feel bad that I was disappointed too. Well, it was great experience. Artificial smiles that can make your friends smile ... are also great. Life rocks. I learned something new today. Smile .. even when you are disappointed. The disappointment will be disappointed and .. will leave you in disappointment ;)

Well, dont try to understand ... that was some crap .. which I hardly understood. So, obvious .. you might not ;)

Well, I ll get back to my great life. Once again ... jhor se bolo .. "Ooty Rockedd !!!"

Happy Valentine's Day !!!

Broken Arrow Hearts are broken every day. It reaches maximum on one single day. That day is celebrated is called as "Valentine's Day". Yeah, I'm single .. but just because, all arrows are not strong enough to pierce. The arrow which I shot is broken. Even then, I'm not writing this as a guy who belive in L.i.E(Love is Evil) coz, I aint a love-hater. But, I'm just against people who earn loads of money on the name of "love".

The primary motive behind this stupid Broken Heart's day is .. nothing but money .. money .. more money. Some people who earn those $$$ are

1. Greeting card companies
2. Florists
3. Bakery Guys
4. Who sell .. cute and cuddly teddy bears
5. Restaurants & resorts
6. Nevertheless .. condom company guys (Thanks for the info @ Deepu. He has statistics also, which I wasn't interested in knowing)
7. Many other guys, about whom I've no idea about

Believe it or not, Valentine's days is the second biggest season for greeting card guys after Christmas. Just on the name of "love", people are wasting so much of money on Greeting cards, Flowers, Jewellery, Soft toys, chocoloates etc etc.

Yeah, I know that, their love is soooo special and they want to celebrate it like anything. Even now, I'm not against celebrations. I'm just against the methods of celebrations. When your love is so special, why dont you do something great, or atleast something good along with your valentine rather than freaking out in a pub or a resort ??

Just, take your valentine to an orphanage, let her give some chocolates to the kids there or go to some oldage home and give some clothes to them. Anything, that can help people who NEED HELP. Why can't people give 50% of the money that they spend on these cards or gifts to some charity. When your love is soooooooo great, is your lover not that great to understand that .. you preferred helping some needy people rather giving her an expensive gift ??? If she can't understand that you care for her and the society, do you need her ??? Valentine's day is to surprise your loved ones by letting them know that you care for them. Not to give them expensive gifts !!!

And last but not least .. for the media .. why the hell are you giving so much hype to Valentine's day ??? ** points rediff ** There are sooo many ads on valentine's day. Do you love your valentine ? Tell us how much you do !!

God, if I love my valentine .. why should I TELL YOU ?????? I thought, there might be some people who really want to tell how do they love their valentine and checked the replies. I cant believe that, people are trying to find instant girl friends online. One convo on rediff ..

Manjunath : I doesn't have any girlfriend, anybody girls want to my friend.
Ritu : Can i be ur friend

In this age of fast food, now, I see girls offering fast friendship and guys asking for faster love !!!
After few hours, they exchange phone numbers, the next day they meet, guy gives an expensive gift to show that he cares, they spend the evening happily .. and what after that ????

Same old story. Hearts are broken every day. It reaches maximum on one single day. That day is celebrated is called as "Valentine's Day".

Guys, don't waste money on these type of Days !!! After all ... its yet another habit .. we imported from the West. Valentine's day is NOT our culture. It does n't mean that we should nt celebrate it. Just .. celebrate it in our style. Dont waste money. India is not as rich as West to waste money :)

PS: Let me make clear once again. I'm not against valentine's day. But, it certainly is kinda stupid when you are single. Who knows, I might have given a diamond pendant if I had a girl friend. After all, I'm also an Indian.

Slowdown Culture

Got a forward from a friend. Thought to share with you folks. If you've time to read, then read it. If you've sense to follow to it, then follow it.

An interesting reflection: Slow Down Culture

It's been 18 years since I joined Volvo, a Swedish company. Working for them has proven to be an interesting experience. Any project here takes 2 years to be finalized, even if the idea is simple and brilliant. It's a rule.

Globalize processes have caused in us (all over the world) a general sense of searching for immediate results. Therefore, we have come to posses a need to see immediate results. This contrasts greatly with the slow movements of the Swedish. They, on the other hand, debate, debate, debate, hold x quantity of meetings and work with a slowdown scheme. At the end, this always yields better results.

Said in another words:
1. Sweden is about the size of San Pablo, a state in Brazil.
2. Sweden has 2 million inhabitants.
3. Stockholm, has 500,000 people.
4. Volvo, Escania, Ericsson, Electrolux, Nokia are some of its renowned companies. Volvo supplies the NASA.

The first time I was in Sweden, one of my colleagues picked me up at the hotel every morning. It was September, bit cold and snowy. We would arrive early at the company and he would park far away from the entrance (2000 employees drive their car to work). The first day, I didn't say anything, either the second or third. One morning I asked, "Do you have a fixed parking space? I've noticed we park far from the entrance even when there are no other cars in the lot." To which he replied, "Since we're here early we'll have time to walk, and whoever gets in late will be late and need a place closer to the door. Don't you think? Imagine my face.

Nowadays, there's a movement in Europe name Slow Food. This movement establishes that people should eat and drink slowly, with enough time to taste their food, spend time with the family, friends, without rushing. Slow Food is against its counterpart: the spirit of Fast Food and what it stands for as a lifestyle. Slow Food is the basis for a bigger movement called Slow Europe, as mentioned by Business Week.

Basically, the movement questions the sense of "hurry" and "craziness" generated by globalization, fueled by the desire of "having in quantity" (life status) versus "having with quality", "life quality" or the "quality of being". French people, even though they work 35 hours per week, are more productive than Americans or British. Germans have established 28.8 hour workweeks and have seen their productivity been driven up by 20%. This slow attitude has brought forth the US's attention, pupils of the fast and the "do it now!".

This no-rush attitude doesn't represent doing less or having a lower productivity. It means working and doing things with greater quality, productivity, perfection, with attention to detail and less stress. It means reestablishing family values, friends, free and leisure time. Taking the "now", present and concrete, versus the "global", undefined and anonymous. It means taking humans' essential values, the simplicity of living.

It stands for a less coercive work environment, more happy, lighter and more productive where humans enjoy doing what they know best how to do. It's time to stop and think on how companies need to develop serious quality with no-rush that will increase productivity and the quality of products and services, without losing the essence of spirit.

In the movie, Scent of a Woman, there's a scene where Al Pacino asks a girl to dance and she replies, "I can't, my boyfriend will be here any minute now". To which Al responds, "A life is lived in an instant". Then they dance to a tango.

Many of us live our lives running behind time, but we only reach it when we die of a heart attack or in a car accident rushing to be on time. Others are so anxious of living the future that they forget to live the present, which is the only time that truly exists. We all have equal time throughout the world. No one has more or less. The difference lies in how each one of us does with our time. We need to live each moment. As John Lennon said, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans".

Good that you reached this long. Hope you learn something from this !!!
